Agroinform noted that egg farmers' feed costs were up close to 40% year-on-year in Q4 2021, while farm gate prices for eggs rose just 16% to HUF 28, close to or even under cost.
The company said said farm gate prices for eggs would have to reach "at least HUF 40" to ensure the stable operation of the farming segment.
Györgyi Molnár, who heads the Hungarian Egg Association, said many hens have been destroyed in France and Italy because of outbreaks of avian influenza there in recent weeks, while the war has impacted egg imports from Ukraine, lifting farm gate prices.
Egg production in Hungary rose about 16% to 1.27 billion last year.
