Schwardy will be responsible for the in-country execution of the bank’s strategy to be the preeminent banking partner for institutions with cross-border needs. He will also foster successful client relationships at all levels of the organization, protect and enhance Citi’s reputation, and serve as the bank’s main regulatory representative in Hungary.
Schwardy has more than 25 years of banking experience with Citi, beginning at its Hungarian branch in 2000. He gradually expanded his remit to cover financial institutions and large corporations before moving to the Middle East to take on a series of leadership roles. Most recently, he led Citi’s Commercial Banking franchise across the Middle East and Africa. Over the years, he has overseen banking operations spanning 11 markets.
Commenting on the appointment, Nanji said, “Hungary continues to be a cornerstone of Citi’s regional strategy. Zoltán combines global perspective with proven execution, and he understands how to bring the strengths of our network to clients in meaningful ways. We are proud to see him return to Hungary in a role that both recognizes his roots and reflects his outstanding leadership journey.”
“It is a great honor to return to Hungary and lead a franchise that plays such an important role in Citi’s global network,” Schwardy said. “I am excited to lead our business at a time when companies and institutions are increasingly looking for a banking partner that can combine deep local knowledge with global capabilities. Our priority is to support clients as they navigate a rapidly evolving environment, helping them grow, manage complexity and capture opportunities across borders.”
Citi has been a trusted partner to clients in Hungary for more than four decades, supporting corporations, governments, investors and institutions with world-class financial products and services.
As one of the largest foreign bank employers in the country, Citi employs more than 3,000 colleagues across its banking operations and the Citi Solutions Center. The center celebrated its 20th anniversary last year and provides more than 20 services to Citi entities globally and across the region.
