Budapest is named as the proposed central venue, the IOC said.
Other interested bidders include Germany, India, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa, and Turkey, with the official application deadline set for Oct. 31.
Candidate cities must present their concepts in November, after which strategic discussions begin in March 2027, leading to a narrowed shortlist in November 2028 and a final host city decision in mid‑2029.
The Hungarian Olympic Committee emphasized that expressing interest does not constitute an official bid. It noted that any responsible hosting decision must follow broad public consultation, with a national commitment required by 2028.
Opposition party Momentum is calling for voters to have the final say, arguing that an Olympics would shape public spending, urban development and green spaces for decades. The party wants detailed information on costs, financing and planned construction before a referendum.
The debate recalls Budapest’s bid for the 2024 Games, which faced opposition criticism over spending priorities and inadequate public consultation. Momentum’s 2017 NOlimpia campaign collected roughly 266,000 signatures seeking a referendum. Budapest subsequently withdrew its bid before a vote could take place.
The MOB says the emerging 2036 concept would emphasize sustainability and urban development. Its president, Zsolt Gyulay, has asked the Metropolitan Council for Public Developments to discuss the proposal this fall. Momentum maintains that even a more restrained concept requires voters’ approval.
