The company’s majority owner, Mattoni 1873, is expanding its international brand portfolio through a production and distribution partnership covering Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Almdudler selected Mattoni 1873 for its expertise and strong local presence in all three markets. The agreement brings together family-owned businesses that share a long-term approach to brand development, quality and trust.
In Hungary, Szentkirályi Magyarország represents Mattoni 1873’s international portfolio. Alongside producing Pepsi products domestically, the company distributes international beverage brands including Schweppes and Lipton. Almdudler will add another established international brand to that offering.
The first bottle of Almdudler was presented by founder Erwin Klein to his bride, Ingrid, as a wedding gift in October 1957. Its original recipe has remained unchanged, based on a blend of 32 Alpine herbs, including gentian, elderflower, echinacea, sage and lemon balm. The precise formula remains a closely guarded secret.
Founded as Erwin and Ingrid Klein’s family business, Almdudler remains entirely family-owned. Regarded as a national drink in Austria, it is among the country’s best-known soft drink brands.
Many consumers in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary are already familiar with its distinctive flavor through hiking holidays, ski trips and other visits to Austria. The partnership aims to strengthen the Austrian brand’s position in Central Europe.
“Almdudler is not just a strong, iconic brand with a wonderful family story behind it. Above all, it is an exceptional product offering a truly distinctive taste experience — ultimately, that is precisely why we believe it fits perfectly into our portfolio,” said Alessandro Pasquale, executive president of Mattoni 1873.
“As two family-owned companies, we share a long-term approach to business and a deep respect for tradition. Building on our experience in production, distribution and developing international brands, we are delighted to make Almdudler available to a much wider audience.”
Three-Market Partnership
Almdudler’s original recipe will remain unchanged, with Mattoni 1873 bottling and distributing the drink in the three countries in accordance with the highest quality standards, the companies said.
The drink will be available in returnable glass bottles, PET bottles and cans in the Czech, Slovak and Hungarian markets. In Slovakia and Hungary, all three packaging types will be included in the respective deposit return systems.
Distribution will be handled directly through Mattoni 1873’s sales network in each market, with Szentkirályi Magyarország responsible for Hungary.
“In Mattoni 1873, we have found a strong partner with an excellent understanding of local markets and expertise in every area, from production and marketing to sales and distribution,” said Almdudler CEO Gerhard Schilling.
“As two family businesses, we also share a similar approach to business: We think long term and want to build brands that endure for generations to come. We are convinced that this cooperation will help us further develop Almdudler in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.”
Expanding an International Portfolio
The agreement builds on Mattoni 1873’s long-term strategy of developing major international licensing and distribution partnerships alongside its own brands.
The group has a longstanding partnership with PepsiCo, and its portfolio includes Schweppes, Dr Pepper, 7UP, Mirinda and Mountain Dew. Almdudler will join the international premium brands the group produces or distributes in Central European markets.
The transition will take place in all three countries on Jan. 1, 2027. Existing distributors will continue deliveries through the end of 2026 to ensure a smooth handover for business partners and consumers.
