Magyar said the European Union decided a few weeks ago, without Hungary’s support, that refugee status could not be granted to military-age men fleeing the war.

The Hungarian government has nevertheless decided to retain the country’s right to grant such status, he said.

Magyar noted that a growing number of the refugees concerned are ethnic Hungarians from Transcarpathia.

He said he had raised the issue with several EU leaders and told the president of the European Council on Wednesday that he considered the EU decision unworthy.

“Hungary will act differently and provide assistance to those in need,” Magyar said.
