Vitézy said former Construction and Transport Minister János Lázár ignored the ministry’s professional recommendation and awarded the motorway concession contract to companies linked to the interests of Lőrinc Mészáros and László Szíjj, resulting in HUF 100 bln (EUR 275 mln) in additional costs over an 11-year period.
Vitézy said M6 Duna, the company currently holding the concession, submitted a HUF 44 bln bid to continue operating the motorway between October 2026 and October 2037, compared with the HUF 149 bln bid accepted by Lázár.
“Quite a difference,” the minister said.
Vitézy also said Lázár did not have the authority to make the decision, as the right to award the concession belonged to the then-national economy minister.
Citing this, Vitézy said the government had not only filed a criminal complaint on suspicion of mismanagement and abuse of office causing particularly significant financial losses, but had also decided that the previous decision was invalid and had no legal effect.
As a result, the government now has the opportunity to choose the cheaper option and intends to do so, he added.
