Hungary’s only nuclear power plant, at Paks, cut output from its No. 2 block by 50% early Thursday as extreme heat and drought pushed water levels on the Danube, used to cool the facility, down to minus 121 centimeters.
Output from the block was reduced from 7 a.m., MVM Paksi Atomerőmű said.
The Paks nuclear power plant has four blocks with a combined capacity of around 2,000 MW.
Output from the No. 1 block was reduced by 254 MW Monday evening after the Danube fell to minus 106 centimeters.
A day later, the plant cut output from the No. 3 block by 237 MW as the river level reached minus 112 centimeters. The block was shut down Wednesday after the water level fell further to minus 118 centimeters.
The reductions come as prolonged drought and a renewed heat wave continue to drive Danube water levels to record lows.
