EPPO’s authority will apply retroactively to financial crimes involving EU funds committed in Hungary after June 1, 2021.

The government must nominate three candidates for the Hungarian European Prosecutor role and ensure that the necessary operational conditions are in place, with the EPPO beginning work 20 days after the Council of the European Union appoints the prosecutor.

EU leaders said the move strengthens rule‑of‑law protections and improves the fight against fraud and corruption affecting EU funds.
