A total of 1,822,483 passengers traveled through Budapest Airport in May, up 7.1% from the same month last year. The most popular destinations were London, Paris and Milan.
Passenger traffic in the first five months of the year exceeded 7.6 million.
The cargo business also continued to grow strongly. Budapest Airport handled 41,398 tonnes of cargo in May, an 11.7% increase from a year earlier. Between January and May, the airport handled 188,457 tonnes of air cargo.
Accessibility Improved at Terminal 2
Budapest Airport, part of the Vinci Airports network, said it remains committed to promoting equal opportunities and paying special attention to the needs of passengers with disabilities. The DANOVA NEXT project, co-financed by the European Union, also supports this goal.
From June, orientation at Terminal 2 of Ferenc Liszt International Airport will become easier with the introduction of an indoor navigation app, which is also available in Hungarian.
The development provides support for visually impaired, wheelchair users and able-bodied passengers on both the landside and airside of the terminal. Its wheelchair mode prioritizes accessible routes, enabling the app to offer personalized assistance to passengers with limited mobility.
In addition to the digital development, Budapest Airport has installed tactile lanes. On the curbside of Terminal 2, tactile lanes connect the building entrance to existing indoor routes designed for visually impaired passengers, allowing them to reach the terminal independently and more safely.
The total length of the airport’s tactile lanes is nearly 2 kilometers.
Downtown Baggage Check-in Launched
Passengers can now check in their baggage in downtown Budapest through the AirportHUB Bag Free HUB service, an official partner of Budapest Airport.
The paid service is available at the company’s store on Kálvin Square. It allows passengers with a valid boarding pass featuring a barcode or QR code to spend their last few hours in the city without their luggage, travel to the airport more conveniently and avoid queues for baggage check-in at the terminal.
Passengers using the service can proceed directly to security screening when they arrive at the airport.
The service is available for passengers on flights departing between noon and midnight. Baggage must be checked in at least four hours before departure. Passengers must also complete online check-in and check in baggage that meets the airline’s size, weight and shape requirements.
The process is similar to self-service baggage check-in at airports. Passengers can print their bag tags on-site, attach them to their suitcases and hand over their checked baggage to store staff. An instructional video guides passengers through the process, and AirportHUB staff are also available to assist.
Budapest Airport and its partner said secure baggage handling is ensured throughout the process. Checked baggage is transported to the airport by a contracted partner in a locked vehicle with a secure cargo compartment and under continuous supervision. Bags are screened at the terminal and handled in the same way as all other checked baggage.
Downtown baggage drop-off is currently available to Wizz Air passengers with a boarding pass containing a barcode or QR code. Budapest Airport and its partners are working to expand the service.
The service is not available for flights to Baku and Tel Aviv.
