Gábor Pósfai made the remarks at a hearing on a meeting of EU interior and justice ministers in Luxembourg.

He said that, of the forms of solidarity outlined in the pact, Hungary considers only technical assistance acceptable. The other elements include quota-based distribution and financial compensation.

Technical assistance would also require the approval of the country facing mass migration and potentially in need of such support, he added.

The issue was discussed preliminarily at a recent meeting of European interior ministers in Luxembourg, but no agreement was reached, Pósfai said.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Pósfai held bilateral talks with his Austrian counterpart on Hungary’s objections to the maintenance of internal border controls within the Schengen area.

He said the idea had been raised of replacing direct controls on the Austria-Hungary border with a new system under which the authorities of the two countries would jointly monitor the regions on either side of the common border.
