The number of unemployed totaled 225,000 during the month.
In the November 2025–January 2026 period, the average number of employed people aged 15–74 reached 4.628 million, down 68,000 from a year earlier.
Male employment fell by 41,000 to 2.449 million, while the number of employed women declined by 27,000 to 2.179 million.
Of those employed, 4.444 million worked in the domestic primary labor market, 81,000 fewer than in the same period a year earlier. The number of public workers was 76,000, while 108,000 Hungarians worked abroad.
Among those aged 15–64, the employment rate edged down 0.4 percentage points to 74.7%, reflecting declines in both the population and the number of employed. The rate stood at 78.2% for men and 71.0% for women.
Unemployment Details
In the three-month period, the average number of unemployed people aged 15–74 rose by 11,000 year on year to 224,000. The unemployment rate was 4.6%, up 0.3 percentage points from the same period in 2025.
The number of unemployed men was 122,000, corresponding to a jobless rate of 4.8%. Among women, 102,000 were unemployed, with a rate of 4.5%.
The average duration of job search was 12.2 months. Some 37.1% of unemployed people had been seeking work for less than three months, while 35.8% had been unable to find a job for at least a year.
According to administrative data from the National Employment Service, the number of registered job seekers at the end of January decreased 2.6% year on year to 224,000.
Overall, the data point to a modest softening in Hungary’s labor market, with employment declining and unemployment edging higher compared with a year earlier.
