Meteorological forecasts indicate that a cyclone developing south of the Alps is expected to move rapidly eastward, bringing substantial rain and snowfall across the region. However, experts say the system’s exact path remains uncertain, making it difficult to predict how much snow will fall in different parts of Hungary.
Weather models suggest that even a minor shift of a few dozen kilometers in the cyclone’s path could significantly affect snowfall totals, as temperatures are expected to hover around freezing. This narrow margin could determine whether precipitation falls as rain or snow, resulting in large variations in accumulation.
According to European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) forecasts cited by Hungarian weather website Időkép, snowfall projections vary widely across the country. Using a 10–90% confidence interval and excluding extreme scenarios, estimates show a broad range of possible outcomes.
In Budapest, current projections suggest that snowfall could reach between 3 cm and 14 cm by Saturday morning, depending on the cyclone’s trajectory and temperature developments. Daytime temperatures in the capital are expected to fall to around 1-2 degrees Celsius on Friday and Saturday, increasing the likelihood of snow accumulation, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.
