This number is slightly lower than the 5,392 recorded in December 2024.
At the same time, the number of marriages rose sharply. A total of 2,271 couples tied the knot in December, up 13% from a year earlier. The live birth rate stood at 7.5 per thousand population and the death rate at 13.4, both lower than in December 2024. The natural decrease per thousand population declined to 5.9, while the marriage rate rose to 2.8 per thousand.
Live Births Decline in 2025
For the full year 2025, Hungary registered an estimated 72,000 live births, 7.1% fewer than in 2024. The total fertility rate fell to an estimated 1.31 children per woman, compared with 1.39 a year earlier. Birth numbers declined across most months, although the drop moderated toward the end of the year.
An estimated 124,200 people died in 2025, down 2.6% year on year. As a result, the natural population decrease widened to about 52,200, 4.5% higher than in the previous year. Infant mortality improved, falling to 3.3 per thousand live births.
The decline in marriages observed in recent years came to a halt. A total of 46,600 marriages were registered in 2025, marginally higher than a year earlier, with a notable increase in the final months of the year.
The positive balance of international migration partly offset the natural population decrease. Based on updated figures from the 2022 census, Hungary’s resident population was estimated at 9.489 million at the end of 2025.
