State Secretary for Agriculture Imre Hubai of the Ministry of Agriculture said in Szeghalom, Békés County explained that the annual irrigation requirement is retained as surplus water within the landscape.

Speaking at a press conference at the Holt-Sebes-Körös backwater, dry for the past decade but which has now been refilled, Hubai said that water retention initiatives had stored 512.6 million cubic meters of water nationwide: 124.1 million in riverbeds, 97.3 million in backwaters, reservoirs, and through landscape flooding, and 291.2 million in dams.

“The priority is to provide drinking water, municipal supply, animal watering, and irrigation. Additionally, when possible, water is released into the landscape for ecological purposes,” he sa id.
