Alexandra Szentkirályi slammed the municipality for neglecting “the serious housing crisis” of recent years, noting that the Fidesz group talked with Márton Nagy, the national economy minister, in connection with a request for government assistance to build a large student dormitory complex in Budapest’s District IX.
“The minister was fully open to those plans,” she said.
She insisted that the crisis could be handled “but not the way [Budapest mayor] Gergely Karácsony is trying to do”.
She suggested that metropolitan funds should be reallocated to provide subsidies for student dormitory developers and the construction of service units run by the city.
She said the mayor had set up a housing agency, which, though it has been operating for half a year, had only freed up eight apartments.
Szentkirályi also warned that unless the upcoming assembly session was able to elect a deputy mayor and pass its operational regulations the metropolitan administration would no longer operate legally.
