Whether corporate or private buyers, Toyota was still the favorite of Hungarian new car buyers in 2023: a new Toyota was bought every 30 minutes in the country.

Last year, Toyota's car sales in Hungary were up 15% year-on-year, with about 75% of the sold models either partially or fully electric. Lexus, the premium brand of the manufacturer, sold 47% more cars in Hungary last year, 99% of which were electric.

As a result, Toyota has maintained its leading position in the Hungarian passenger car and light commercial vehicle market by a staggering 38% more new car sales than its nearest competitor, the company told the Budapest Business Journal via a press release.

The 17,300 new Toyotas and 1,100 new Lexuses sold in Hungary last year mean that 48 Toyotas and three Lexuses were bought every day last year, representing a historic record for the manufacturer.

Toyota Popular Among Corporate and Private Buyers as Well

In 2023, Toyota was the absolute favorite in Hungary with a 19.5% share among private buyers and 11.3% among fleet buyers. This means that last year one in five private individuals chose the environmentally friendly Japanese brand and one in nine new company cars was a Toyota.

With the widest electric range on the market, including plug-in hybrid electric, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell electric cars alongside the popular self-charging hybrid electric models, Toyota was the most popular new car brand in the passenger car market with a 13.2% share, while it was the second most popular choice in the commercial vehicle market with a 14.8% share.

The Toyota Corolla was among the favorites of Hungarian car buyers last year, as was the Yaris Cross,  the Hilux, the Yaris, the C-HR, and the RAV4, the world's best-selling SUV.

Lots of Updates Coming This Year

The Japanese carmaker is set to bring a lot of new products to Hungary this year. The highly anticipated battery-electric large SUV bZ4X will finally become available from stock this year, while the Yaris, GR Yaris, and Yaris Cross models will all be updated.

Other novelties include the launch of the new Camry, the new Land Cruiser, and the new Hilux with a hybrid electric drive. The Proace family of passenger and goods vehicles will be refreshed and a new large-sized member will be added, but the biggest launch will be the all-new C-HR, even though the manufacturer also promises that a brand new battery-electric SUV in the Yaris Cross size class will be launched before the end of the year.

At the same time, Lexus will also be looking to further increase its share of the Hungarian premium market with major new launches: the RZ large battery-electric SUV, the UX selfcharging hybrid electric and battery-electric SUV, the all-new LBX small crossover, and perhaps the biggest launch of the year: the LM luxury passenger van.
