Hungary will gradually cut off its gas deliveries to Ukraine to focus on replenishing its own reserves as Europe enters an “unprecedented energy supply crisis”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a statement issued by his ministry on Wednesday.
Szijjártó said Hungary’s energy supply routes had come under attack recently, “both in the physical and the political sense”, noting the shutdown of the Druzhba crude pipeline and drone attacks on the TurkStream gas pipeline.
“From today, we will gradually cut off deliveries of gas to Ukraine to ensure supply to Hungarian households and factories in the coming period,” he added.
Hungary’s gas reserves contain the equivalent of 24% of annual consumption, well over the 9% ratio across Europe, he said.
