Support for Hungary’s international endeavors will significantly increase in international organisations, such as the United Nations, if diplomatic ties are established with Pacific states, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
In two months, UN member states will vote on applicants for non-permanent membership of the Security Council, one of them being Hungary.
President Pál Schmitt has approved a Foreign Ministry proposal to establish diplomatic ties with Samoa, Kiribati, Palau, Nauru, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Tonga, the Marshall Islands, the Salomon Islands, Micronesia and Papua New Guinea, according to the latest edition of the official gazette Magyar Közlöny.
Establishing diplomatic links with these countries does not involve appointing ambassadors, and the Hungarian ambassador in Canberra, who already also represents Hungary in New Zealand, will be accredited to Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Samoa.
It is of symbolic importance that Hungary should at least maintain diplomatic ties with all UN countries, the ministry said.
