Orbán said Hungary would accept neither mandatory resettlement quotas nor reception centers, calling the latter "migrant ghettos". Hungary will find the "legal and political means" to prevent Brussels' decisions from being implemented, he added.
Brussels' mechanism, "which obviously doesn't work", needs to be replaced with "an efficient Hungarian model", he said.
Orbán said it was a "sad situation" that Hungary had to defend itself from Brussels as well as from illegal migrants and human smugglers. "And defend itself it will," he added.
Hungary is defending not only itself but all of Europe, including Austria, from illegal migrants, Orbán said. He noted that 270,000 of the 330,000 illegal migrants stopped at the EU's frontiers last year had tried to cross the border between Hungary and Serbia.
Hungary's model for managing migration is based on a simple principle: Nobody can enter the area of the country until their application for asylum has been processed, Orbán explained.
Orban acknowledged the work of Serbian President Vucic and said there would be "hundreds of thousands more" illegal migrants in countries such as Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands without Serbia and Hungary.
He also thanked Austrian Chancellor Nehammer for taking a stand with Hungary at the latest EU summit in Brussels.
Orbán also conceded that there might be solutions to deal with illegal migration on the sea, but said those solutions wouldn't work on dry land.
