Justice Minister Bence Tuzson said that while the judiciary historically focused on capturing perpetrators, the government “recognized that is not enough and launched a system aiding victims so that crime is punished but victims are also helped.”

While the number of crimes committed in Hungary declined in past years, the number of those turning to victim aid centres has grown from around 35,000 in 2024 to ca. 45,000 in 2025, Tuzson said.

“That shows that the system works and people trust it,” he said. Touching on the matter of online fraud, Tuzson said that such crimes were difficult to clear up. The government has, therefore, developed a complex package of legislation, thanks to which 3.8 billion forints (EUR 10m) had already been recovered from criminals, he said.

Nóra Király, the government commissioner for victim aid centers, said Hungary had a victim helpline for a decade, available at 06-80-225-225. From now on, the two numbers will operate simultaneously, she added.
