Hungary’s use of recycling and other alternative waste management methods is among the lowest in the EU, according to a recently published report by Eurostat. The report summarizes the 2009 waste management activities of EU member states.
According to the report, Hungary landfilled 75% of its municipal waste, incinerated 10%, recycled 13% and composted 2% in 2009.On average, each Hungarian generated 430kg of waste, of which 427kg was treated
Bulgaria, Romania, Malta, Lithuania and Latvia had the highest percentages of landfilled waste, with figures ranging between 100-92%. These compare to 0% in Germany , closely followed by the Netherlands, Austria and Sweden at 1%, each.
