EU member states are expected to reach and agreement in March solidifying the principles of strengthening the bloc’s economy.

The initial debate of the package comprising six steps has been concluded in February and the next month will bring a preliminary ratification in line with the Hungarian presidency’s timetable for the issue, state secretary to the National Development Ministry András Kármán told Parliament.

Four of the six measures require coordination with the European Parliament. Accordingly, Hungary hopes that the EU will fully approve the strategy by June, Kármán said.

The official pointed out that earlier the focus of economic strategies was adhering to deficit targets with little regard to state debt and this made the entire system non-credible. Therefore, the Hungarian presidency will devote unprecedented attention to member states reducing their state debts.
