The European Commission is claiming back €79.9 million of farm subsidies that Poland received from the EU’s Agricultural Fund between 2004 and 2006, as well as between 2007 and 2010, local media reported. According to the Commission, Poland did not provide sufficient verification of farmers’ applications. As a result, some of the subsidies were awarded to persons who should not have received them. “As far as Poland is concerned, the case concerns mainly state controls. The mistakes have been made usually not by farmers, but by the administration, which has not properly verified farmers’ claims for direct subsidies,” the Warsaw Business Journal quoted an EC spokesperson as saying. Poland said it will appeal the decision.
