Deputy Prime Minister Tibor Navracsics on Tuesday said he was “cautiously optimistic” about the outcome of infringement procedures launched against Hungary by the European Commission in January.

Navracsics, who is also Minister of Justice and Public Administration, told InfoRádió that the country had responded well to the Commission’s concerns. He added that the Commission could take decisions on the matters as soon as Wednesday.


The Commission decided early in March to continue accelerated infringement procedures on the independence of the country’s data protection supervisor and measures affecting the judiciary, and ask for additional information on the central bank’s independence.


“The promise to change Hungary’s legislation affecting the independence of the central bank addresses some of the key concerns of the Commission. Now Hungary needs to flesh out these commitments and provide evidence through new legislation,” the Commission said at the time. “At the same time, the Commission still has concerns about measures affecting the judiciary and the independence of the country’s data protection supervisor,” it added.
