The man was captured by staff from the National Bureau of Investigation’s Fugitive Search Department, with assistance from the Counter Terrorism Center (TEK). The department is part of the bureau’s Life Protection and Targeted Search Division, which operates under the Rapid Response Police.

According to police.hu, the suspect, identified by the initials K. M. A., had fired several shots at a person in Cologne in the early hours of May 31. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries.

German investigators had been searching for the man, who also had connections to Hungary, in a case that drew significant media attention. After the shooting, the suspect fled, and a European arrest warrant was issued against him.

On June 10, German authorities informed Hungarian investigators through the International Criminal Cooperation Center of the National Police Headquarters that the wanted man could be in Budapest.

Following screening and verification work by the Hungarian authorities, investigators established the suspect’s exact location. Police said an operation was organized immediately because the man was considered highly dangerous, with TEK’s operational unit also involved.

The suspect was captured in Budapest’s District VIII within five hours of the notification from German authorities and was taken to the District VIII Police Station.

After the arrest, the International Criminal Cooperation Center coordinated the necessary international cooperation, assisted in bringing the suspect before a court, and is handling tasks related to his later handover, police.hu said.

Hungarian police said the case showed the importance of coordinated cooperation between domestic and international law enforcement authorities.
