The Mezőtúr District Court sentenced the 43-year-old woman, who has a criminal record, for endangering a minor. It also barred her for two years from any occupation involving the upbringing, supervision, care or medical treatment of people under 18.

According to the statement, the mother, “flouting” a final court ruling that terminated her parental supervision rights and placed the child with her father, lived in hiding with her daughter from November 2014 to June 2025 and refused to hand the girl over.

According to the final ruling, the girl, now 15, grew up unable to attend kindergarten or school. Her mother initially taught her, after which she “educated herself” using textbooks and the internet.

She lived within a narrow circle, hiding with her mother and maternal relatives. She feared that her father, whom she knew only through her mother’s “horror stories,” or the authorities would find them and take her away from her mother, the statement said.

The Mezőtúr District Prosecutor’s Office filed charges on July 21, 2026. At a preparatory hearing on Oct. 6, the woman admitted the offense as charged and waived her right to a trial.

The prosecution, the defendant and her defense counsel all accepted the verdict, making it final on the day it was delivered.
