The ministry noted that rules in force at present would require the free-purpose loan rate to be raised to over 13%, in the context of the current interest rate environment, but the government had decided to maintain interest subsidies for the benefit of students "on whom the long-term competitiveness and prosperity of the economy depends".
Diákhitel's loans for tuition will stay interest-free, the ministry said.
More than 200,000 student loan contracts are in force at present.
