At present, gross government debt stands at over 80% of GDP.
Lajos Kosa, the party’s deputy leader, told the public television channel MTV that Fidesz would propose a respective amendment during a debate by lawmakers on the new constitution.
Janos Lazar, the party’s group leader, told commercial television channel TV2 earlier on Monday that the party would announce a proposal during a parliamentary debate of the constitution later on Monday. Without revealing precise details, he said the proposal would touch on the Constitutional Court’s powers.
The two Fidesz politicians’ comments came after the party’s governing body discussed amendments to the draft constitution on Sunday. Governing party MPs will discuss the proposals on Monday.
One of the provisions of the governing alliance’s draft constitution requires to lower the government debt to 50% of GDP, though it does not stipulate a timetable for the measure. Until the debt limit is reached the draft would not allow the government to raise loans or undertake financial obligations which would increase state debt from the previous year except for special cases, including a deep and lasting economic contraction.
Kosa said the current curbs on the Constitutional Court’s powers to overrule certain public-finance-related laws would stay in place for the time being, but an amendment would be made to restore these powers in the future should the public debt target be met.
