The Socialist-liberal coalition’s plans to cut the number of MPs to 298 from 386 and simplify parliamentary elections have been sent to main opposition party Fidesz, since the proposed legislation would need a two-thirds majority to pass. The opposition’s spokesman Robert Repassy told MTI that he would coordinate with the Prime Minister’s cabinet chief today. The nine bills published on www.miniszterelnok.hu also include changing the current two-round election into a single round and introducing stricter rules the accountability of MPs, as well as cutting in the number of local council representatives by 20-40% and the number of ministries from 17 to 12. Stricter rules on spending and fundraising are also part of the package.
