This was the lowest reading since September 2021, as food prices moderated (5.82% vs 6.84% in November) due to lower costs of oil, lard and fats (-25.32% vs -25.02%). In contrast, inflation slightly increased for non-food products (5.51% vs 5.08%) and services (11.21% vs 11.18%).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices advanced by 0.26% in December, rebounding from a 0.01% drop in November. In a separate report the Bucharest-based statistics agency said that the country's industrial production dropped 4.4% year-on-year in November following an upwardly revised 5.1% decline in the previous month.

Compared to the previous month, industrial output fell 0.6%, the second straight month of drop, after an upwardly revised 1.4% decrease in October.
