Compared with April, consumer prices remained unchanged on average, KSH said.

Food prices rose 0.5% year-on-year in May, although they fell 2.1% when food and beverage serving services are excluded. Within the food category, the price of other bakery products increased by 9.2%, buffet products by 7.0%, prepaid fixed-price meals at canteens by 6.2%, candies and honey by 5.8%, restaurant meals by 5.7%, and fresh domestic and tropical fruit by 4.5%.

At the same time, several food items became cheaper. The price of canned meat fell by 29.5%, butter by 11.1%, pork by 10.1%, cheese by 9.4%, pasta products by 7.2%, milk by 6.3%, and potatoes by 2.6%.

Services became 4.3% more expensive year-on-year. Within this category, theater tickets rose 17.6%, recreation abroad 15.6%, the transport of goods 10.5%, and other public entertainment tickets and vehicle repairs and maintenance both by 8.0%. Personal care services were 7.8% more expensive, while recreation in Hungary cost 5.2% more.

Alcoholic beverage and tobacco prices increased by 3.3%, including a 4.1% rise in tobacco prices.

Consumers paid 2.0% less for electricity, gas and other fuels. Within this group, natural and manufactured gas prices fell 7.1%, while electricity prices rose 2.5%.

Consumer durable prices were up 2.4% year-on-year. Jewelry cost 28.1% more, motorcycles 6.9% more, living and dining room furniture 3.8% more, and second-hand passenger cars 3.7% more. Pharmaceutical products became 2.5% more expensive, while motor fuel prices rose 2.0%.

Food Prices Fall Month-on-Month

Compared with April, consumer prices stagnated on average in May. Food prices fell 0.3% on average, or 0.6% excluding food and beverage serving services.

Within the food category, potatoes cost 32.3% more than in April, fresh domestic and tropical fruit rose 1.2%, while other bakery products and edible oil both became 0.5% more expensive.

Several food prices declined on a monthly basis. Fresh vegetables cost 10.6% less, eggs 4.6% less, cheese 2.9% less, coffee at shops and dried vegetables both 1.6% less, sugar 1.4% less, and bread, chocolate and cocoa, and milk all 1.1% less. Pork prices fell 0.8%, while milk products excluding cheese were 0.6% cheaper.

Service prices increased 0.2% on average compared with April. Recreation in Hungary became 3.0% more expensive, while other travel cost 3.1% less and recreation abroad 0.2% less.

Electricity, gas and other fuel prices fell 0.8% month-on-month. Within this group, natural and manufactured gas prices declined by 2.1%, while the price of purchased heat was unchanged.

Alcoholic beverage and tobacco prices rose 0.2%, including a 0.2% increase in tobacco prices and a 0.1% rise in alcoholic beverage prices.

Motor fuel prices were unchanged from April, while clothing and footwear cost 0.8% more for consumers.
