It was still the lowest reading since September 2021, as prices slowed for food & non-alcoholic beverages (2.8% vs 4.2% in April), alcoholic beverages & tobacco (5.4% vs 5.9%), clothing & footwear (0.7% vs 0.9%), recreation & culture (3.8% vs 4.5%), and miscellaneous goods and services (4.3% vs 5%).
On the other hand, costs rose for transport (5.9% vs 5.6%), communication (3.2% vs 2.7%), and restaurants & hotels (10.7% vs 10.4%), while prices fell at softer pace for housing & utilities (-0.5% vs -0.6%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices grew 0.1% in May, slowing from a 0.7% rise in the prior period.
Measured by the EU-harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP), prices of goods and services for personal consumption increased by an average 4.3% year-on-year in May. On a monthly comparison basis, HICP rose by 0.2% in May.
