Hungary – as the current holder of the rotating presidency of the EU – agreed the postponement in consultation with the European Council and Poland, which will assume the bloc’s six-month presidency in July, the statement read. The Foreign Ministry said the change was necessary because “several other important international events coincide with the May date agreed by EU officials.”
The summit, which was once planned for May 27 in Budapest, will be held in September or October. The Eastern Partnership, inaugurated in 2009, is designed to consolidate cooperation of the EU with its eastern neighbors, namely Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
