Kálmán Széll (1843-1915) was Prime Minister of Hungary in 1899-1903, when the country was part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. He broke a stalemate in Parliament by making a pact with the opposition, allowing the swift passage of legislation that helped bring the country through an economic crisis.
Széll was no newcomer to crisis and was practiced in tight fiscal policy. As a finance minister in 1875-1878, he reduced the budget gap from 63 million forints to 23 million forints.
Széll resigned as prime minister after a row over the draft.
