According to Orbán “serious lessons will be learnt” from the matter, which he called a “symbolic affair” and a “European affair”. He said the issue of EU budget money being funneled into Hungaryʼs political sphere was “deeply foreign” to EU principles.
The European Commission officially informed the Hungarian government in mid-May that everything is in order with the contract awarded to Altus, a company owned by current leader of the Democratic Coalition opposition party Ferenc Gyurcsány, to assess European Union-financed development projects from 2014 to 2020, Cabinet Chief János Lázár said.
It was later reported that the Hungarian government sent evidence of illegal, secret party financing related to a European Union contract awarded to a company owned by Gyurcsány to Brussels.
