The minister said he has convened his colleagues from EU member states for a meeting in Luxembourg on June 7 to discuss the impact of the infection on the fruit and vegetable sector.
“A very serious infection has occurred, there are victims, but the cucumber and vegetable sector has also fallen victim even though the infection did not actually start from where it was first suspected,” the minister said.
The minister said confidence in the products has been shaken, and this confidence must be restored. He confirmed that Hungarian cucumbers have been safe to eat all along and “the tests have removed suspicion from cucumbers”.
Fazekas asked traders to buy the produce from cucumber growers and forward it to consumers.
He said Hungary has also been hit by Russia’s ban on vegetable imports from the EU as 10-15% of Hungary’s vegetable exports go to Russia.
The minister also said that there are no imported cucumbers at all in Hungary, because Hungarian producers can meet domestic demand.
