Travel discounts could be scrapped for pensioners under 65

Travel discounts could be eliminated for pensioners under 65 years of age, daily Népszava said on Thursday.

At present, pensioners under 65 are eligible for a 90% discount off a limited number of train and bus fares. The change would affect hundreds of thousands of people, the paper said. The National Development Ministry told the paper that travel discounts would be preserved for “senior citizens (over 65), young children (under 6), the disabled (and those accompanying them) and students”. In all other cases, it will be up to railway company MÁV and long-distance bus group Volán to decide whether the fare discounts are maintained, restricted or eliminated.
