The new tariff system aims to support rail travel and conform to the level of service, the ministry said. Thus supplementary tickets for travel on InterCity (IC) and EuroCity (EC) trains will be priced according to the distance travelled, it added.
The first step of the restructuring will involve creating separate tariff categories for national, suburban and regional services, the ministry said.
At present, the tariff system is uniform.
The ministry said the new system is expected to raise revenue for transport services by an annual HUF 3 billion and slightly reduce the fiscal burden. The new system will be reviewed after six months at the earliest and any necessary corrections made, it added.
