The agreement is intended to combine BME’s engineering, IT and research and development expertise with OTP Bank’s practical cybersecurity experience in the corporate and financial sectors.

The cooperation will cover education, research, innovation, talent development and scientific outreach, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.

As digitalization, artificial intelligence and financial services continue to evolve technologically, cybersecurity has become an issue of broader economic and social importance rather than solely an IT concern, the partners said.

The cooperation will therefore focus on giving students access to practical industry experience alongside up-to-date theoretical knowledge. Key areas include information security, data protection, financial cybersecurity, the protection of digital infrastructure, incident management and cyber risks linked to emerging technologies.

Under the agreement, OTP Bank experts may participate in BME cybersecurity education and professional programs, helping students expand their practical knowledge. The partners may also cooperate on the preparation of joint research and development projects, professional events, lectures and workshops, as well as student projects and thesis topics.

Cooperation Centered on CrySyS Lab

“For BME, it is particularly important that our students and researchers have the opportunity to work with industry partners that face the most complex cybersecurity challenges in their daily operations. The agreement with OTP Bank creates an opportunity for the university’s knowledge and the practical experience of the financial sector to jointly contribute to strengthening digital security in Hungary,” said Hassan Charaf, rector of BME.

The cooperation will primarily be implemented through the lecturers and students of the CrySyS Lab at BME’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics.

“It is a strategically important step that, alongside ELTE and the National University of Public Service, we are also bringing the Budapest University of Technology and Economics into our university partnerships, further expanding OTP Bank’s cybersecurity research and development ecosystem. As part of the cooperation, including through the jointly operated cyber lab, we will strengthen the research and development of innovative defensive solutions that more effectively support the fight against fraud and the prevention and mitigation of threats originating from cyberspace,” said Bence Borókai, group chief cybersecurity officer at OTP Bank.

The partners said the long-term cooperation could contribute to the development of a stronger cybersecurity professional community in Hungary, combining engineering expertise with practical industry knowledge.
