According to the resolution approved with 21 voting in support and 11 against, the “Municipal Council cannot provide agglomeration public transport services as commitments taken over from the state because contrary to agreement, the state has not provided funding for this in 2015 and 2016” and the government has already said they are willing to take back management tasks, MTI reported.
According to MTI, the municipal council will provide service until the end of March. If the practical issues of transferring tasks from the council to the government are not resolved by then, the council will grant a temporary extension until the process is complete in exchange for a reimbursement of expenses accumulated during the interim period, the new agency added.
Budapest Mayor István Tarlós and National Development Minister István Seszták have been in negotiations recently regarding the government taking over public transport in the agglomeration of the capital. Seszták said on January 25 that the government is ready to bear expenditures related to public transport in the agglomeration as of January 1, 2016. Tarlós reportedly said the capitalʼs city council will continue to provide public transport in the area until the Hungarian government takes over its management.
