Tarlós said that, if passed, drivers “within the city limits would pay a minimal fee,” while drivers of the “inner city” would be required to pay a congestion charge “in the literal sense of the word”. He said that he would support the proposal for the “lack of a better one”.
Tarlós reiterated that responsibility for the introduction of the charge was that of the cityʼs previous government, which had agreed to it as a condition for winning European Union support for the construction of the new fourth metro line.
Therefore, the mayor said, Budapest must either introduce the congestion fee or pay back all the EU funding it had received for the project.
