The number of foreign visitors in Hungary was up 1.3% yr/yr at 7.579m in the first quarter of 2011 and the number of Hungarians travelling abroad rose 3.1% to 3.513m, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) said on Friday.
The number of foreign visitors rose yr/yr in Q1 the second time since Q4 2009 and the number of Hungarians travelling abroad rose for the second time since Q2 2009. Both increases started in Q4 last year.
Hungary’s tourism surplus fell 21.2% yr/yr to HUF 74.9bn in the first quarter of 2011 as spending by foreign tourists (tourism exports) fell 4.2% to HUF 207.86bn and Hungarians’ spending abroad rose 8.6% to HUF 132.95bn. HUF 131.44bn or almost two-thirds of the amount spent by foreign tourists was related to tourism consumption. Of tourism imports, HUF 80.22bn or 60% of spending was related to tourism consumption.
