In April, 2011 the proportion of the adult Hungarian population considering work abroad for a few weeks or months is 12, the probe revealed. Around 13% of them plan working abroad for a few years, and 7% would leave the country forever. Altogether, 17% of the adult Hungarian population is considering migration for a shorter or longer period.
The willingness to go abroad grew drastically from 1990 to 2000. Ever since, percentages have fluctuated, but the total continued to grow. The proportion of those considering long term or any other sort of migration is on a new high from what was measured in 1993, and according to a research series conducted for nearly two decades, it is the highest ever measured.
The direction of the migration reflects even today the “mental map” that was changed after the 2004 EU accession; the most favored destination of migration still remain Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom.
