Hungary to consider closing Debrecen refugee camp

The Hungarian Parliament could vote on a proposal today to close the refugee camp in Debrecen by November, ruling Fidesz Caucus Leader Lajos Kósa said today according to Hungarian news agency MTI. Kósaʼs statement did not address where the refugees would go, though the government has suggested setting up “comfortable tent camps” for refugees outside of the city.

The camp in Debrecen is a long-term residence facility for asylum seekers that has been operating for years.

Kósa said he discussed the issue with Hungary’s Interior Minister Sándor Pintér yesterday, and the two politicians agreed that the refugee camp needs to be closed as soon as possible, as it “causes a lot of trouble”.

Kósa added that the area where the camp is located will be given another function once the refugee camp is closed.

Kósa said that “although there are 3,500 foreign students in Debrecen, who pay tuition fee and accept and keep to requirements, the majority of camp residents are not like them, and their way of living poses a threat to Debrecen citizens and to the good reputation of the university” in the city. Therefore, “it is inevitable for the camp to be closed”, the caucus leader said.
