Hungary’s population totaled 9.968 million at the end of June 2011, dropping 18,000 from the end of 2010 as immigration offset part of the natural decrease, preliminary data from the Central Statistics Office (KSH) show.
Deaths exceeded live births by 24,448 in the first half of this year but the population fell less: by 18,000 as international immigration offset part of the natural decline.
The natural decline in 2010 exceeded the 2009 decline by more than 6,100.
The number of live births fell 8% from a year earlier to 41,586 in H1 2011, while the number of deaths was up 1.6% yr/yr, totaling 66,034.
Calculated per thousand people, live births fell to 8.4 from 9.1 a year earlier, while deaths rose 0.2 to 13.3. Marriages were unchanged at 2.9 per thousand people.
