The huge stone was discovered by workers following a blasting operation and was taken to the Science Museum in Budapest for a series of tests. Antal Embey-Isztin, head of the museum’s mineral department, said that the vegetation which later silicified into the semi-precious stone, had been part of a forest some 15 million years ago. Wood opals of this size are extremely rare, he added. The fossil will probably be made part of the museum’s permanent exhibition. (english.mti.hu)
