The 20-member research group started the project to develop active ingredients for type 2 diabetes medicines that have fewer side effects in the summer of 2009, Patonay said. Thus far, three compounds have shown positive results in laboratory mice, and a fourth compound is currently being tested, he added.
The consortium wants to patent at least one compound, but perhaps more, when the project winds up in the summer, he said.
The researchers, including four from abroad, won a HUF 425 million European Union grant for the project. Self-financing and support from drugmakers covered the remaining HUF 75 million cost.
