The project to modernize the airport is part of a larger plan to renew the Balaton region during the 2014-2020 European Union budgetary period, the mayor told the daily. The mayor added that as the result of the highway connection, new investments could be brought to the nearby towns of Zalaegerszeg and Nagykanizsa.
Passenger numbers at the airport, which is 49% owned by Hungarian SGH Aviation Hungary, rose by almost one fifth to 33,000 last year from 2013, Magyar Idők said.
SGH Aviation Hungary is owned by Gábor Széles whose holdings include the Videoton group, television station Echo TV and daily Magyar Hirlap among others, Hungarian news agency MTI reported. The company purchased its stake in the airport for HUF 700 million from the local government of Hévíz in October 2014, MTI said, adding that the local government currently holds 49% ownership while the local government of Zalavár holds the remaining 2%.
