Romania’s Prime Minister Victor Ponta lost his “self control” and “offended all of Hungary” with his “thoughtless statement” made earlier about the wire fence expansion into Romania, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said, according to a report by Hungarian news agency MTI published yesterday. “Civilized European politicians do not express such unrestrained slander,” Szijjártó reportedly said. The Hungarian politician rejected Ponta’s statement on behalf of “the entire Hungarian nation.” Following the Hungarian government’s announcement on Tuesday, that the wire fence on the Serbian border would be expanded along the Romanian border to prevent human traffickers and migrants from modifying their routes, Ponta said in a Facebook post that “Hungarian decision makers are no better than the Syrians or Libyans from which the refugees are fleeing”, MTI reported. In his Facebook post he reportedly said that he does not want to react to the “provocation of the representatives of the Hungarian government,” but “as a human and a citizen of Europe” he feels “outraged at measures like those experienced in Europe in the 1930s and 1940s,” MTI added. According to MTI, Ponta said that the Hungarian measures “are the shame to the culture and values of the European Union.”
