“Hungary is glad that this decree came to life, the UN made the right decision,” Martonyi said on Friday. He added, however, that he would have preferred such a decision was made earlier as many civilian lives could have been saved.
The UN Security Council authorized air strikes on Libyan targets Friday to protect civilians as Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s forces closed in on the rebel stronghold of Benghazi. Hungary isn’t considering becoming involved in direct military action, Martonyi added. “I see no military capacity that we would be able to use,” he said, adding that the Hungarian government will consider other steps. Apart from the Hungarian military, there are Hungarian soldiers serving under NATO command, and their combat will be controlled by the organization, Martonyi said.
